Jan. 9--City concerned about Osos sewer situation

At least one city in San Luis Obispo County is worried about potential far-reaching effects of the Los Osos sewer saga.

Grover Beach City Council members decided last week to send a letter to the county about its concerns about the possibility of the county taking over the sewer project.

If the Los Osos Community Service District goes bankrupt and the county has to take over sewer construction, Grover Beach Councilman David Ekbom said all other cities and towns in the county could be affected.

"County overhead touches us all," Ekbom said. "How can we avoid our citizens being hit with any kind of financial impacts from what's going on over there in Los Osos?"

If the county takes over, it will have to direct county staff time and money to the project, Ekbom said.

Ekbom acknowledged that his concerns were a worst-case scenario. Still, he wanted to be sure Grover Beach was protected from problems in Los Osos.

"They can make any decision they want until we have to start paying for it," Ekbom said. "They have to keep their problems over there."

Tech seminar aimed at agriculture employees

Allan Hancock College of Santa Maria is joining with two other colleges to hold a high-technology seminar for agriculture employees at the Shore Cliff Lodge in Pismo Beach from Jan 19 to 21.

The conference is intended to train agricultural educators and managers in how to use technology such as geographic information systems -- GIS -- and global positioning systems -- GPS.

The symposium begins at 4 p.m. Jan. 19 and ends on the afternoon of Jan. 21. Registration through Jan. 16 is $30.

More information is available by contacting Steve Palladino at spalladino@vcccd.net or at 654-6500, ext. 1365.
