Kontiki Powers New Sky by Broadband Service Giving Sky Digital Customers Secure and Legal Access to Movies and Sports Highlights on Their PCs
Kontiki, the industry pioneer in legitimate peer-to-peer video delivery, today announced that British Sky Broadcasting Limited (Sky) has deployed the Kontiki Delivery Management System (DMS) to deliver feature-length movies, sports and entertainment programming over the Internet to eligible Sky digital customers at no extra charge.
The new service, called Sky by broadband, represents the UK's first legal movie download service, and will be offered as a value-added service to millions of Sky customers in the UK and Ireland.
"Working with Kontiki to design and deploy Sky by broadband has delivered a product that is secure, whilst compelling, and intuitive. This exciting new service is part of a continuing stream of innovations that will create even more reasons to join Sky digital," said Stephen Nuttall, Sky's Director of Business Development.
Through Sky by broadband, subscribers will be able to legally download movies and view over one thousand sports highlights directly from their PC. More than 200 movies will be available at launch including a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and classics.
All content downloaded by a subscriber is protected using DRM so that all illegal copying or sharing of content is prevented. The Kontiki DMS also features a centrally managed publishing process to ensure that only authorized content can be published and distributed to authorized subscribers of the new service. Sky can now securely deliver top-quality movies in DVD quality to subscribers' PCs, while ensuring compliance with the copyright protection requirements of content owners.
"Sky is revolutionizing the way its customers can watch high quality movie and sports content over the internet," said Scott Sahadi, Kontiki's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "I applaud the Kontiki, ioko, and Sky technical teams for doing a tremendous job delivering this service and bringing the Sky by broadband vision to life. Sky by broadband is setting the standard for delivering movies and sports programming to such a massive audience."
As broadband adoption increases in the UK and Europe, consumer media companies like Sky have sought solutions that feature secure, scalable and cost-efficient delivery of long-form video to the end user. With Kontiki, Sky is able to minimize the cost of bandwidth and infrastructure necessary to deliver high quality long-tail video, while delivering content at a massive scale to millions of users. Kontiki provided a fully customizable, Sky branded delivery platform that offered guaranteed network-efficient delivery through secure peer-to-peer delivery, and robust reporting capabilities to measure the success of this new offering.
