NetEx Enables International Data Transmission Services for Global Wide Area Network

Posted on: Wednesday, 11 January 2006, 09:00 CST

NetEx, the worldwide leader in high-performance data transport solutions, today announced that it has teamed with Telstra, Australia's leading telecommunications and information services provider, to deliver a high-performance, end-to-end data transmission solution for a Fortune 1000 customer over a Telstra Global Wide Area Network.

Telstra chose NetEx's HyperIP(R) appliance to provide the required TCP/IP performance enhancements to implement its Global MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) Solution for a large corporate customer with a daily transmission requirement exceeding 1 terabyte of data between its Sydney and New York locations.

Telstra is one of many telecommunications leaders that have adopted HyperIP as the cornerstone of its expanded data protection, disaster recovery and data migration services. HyperIP enables telecom providers to deliver new services by optimizing their existing infrastructure and bandwidth investments and eliminating the costs and complexity of alternative IP WAN solutions.

HyperIP provides application acceleration and WAN optimization for data replication and large file transfer requirements that are not usually possible over global distances due to high latency. HyperIP eliminates the traditional limitations of high-volume TCP/IP data transfers over long distances by shielding applications against packet loss, jitter, congestion and other network disruptions; mitigating inherent network latency for remote TCP/IP data transmission; and compressing data for improved WAN efficiencies using sequence reduction algorithms.

"This solution accelerates our customers' ability to move data even when they have limited bandwidth," said Drew Kelton, Telstra Global Solutions Managing Director. "With Telstra offering the NetEx HyperIP solution, businesses will be able to improve performance and efficiency, no matter which continents they are sending data to and from. This meets what many customers say they need -- a high performance end-to-end solution which is easily installable and maintainable that complements our Global IP/MPLS Solution."

"HyperIP has once again proven that it is unmatched in overcoming the limits of long-distance TCP/IP transfers and enabling a new generation of wide area data solutions for customers such as Telstra," said Robert MacIntyre, Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at NetEx.

"HyperIP is a must-have storage-over-WAN tool for telecom providers, since it directly addresses their customers' concerns of reliability, security and performance," said Marc Staimer, president of Dragon Slayer Consulting. "HyperIP's combination of data compression, bandwidth optimization and a design tuned for high-speed connections provides exceptional performance without the need for an additional infrastructure investment."

In recent testing over the customer's production network, the HyperIP-enabled solution produced dramatic results. Telstra's Global IP/MPLS utilized an OC3 network (155 Mbps) between locations, and the network path measured a round-trip latency of 238 ms. The benchmark test transferred a 600 megabyte file using the customer application. The first transfer test using native FTP (without HyperIP) took 40 minutes to complete. Running the same test with HyperIP significantly reduced the FTP data transfer time to just 30 seconds -- a 99 percent reduction in time and an 8,000 percent increase in effective data throughput. HyperIP is achieving an application-to-application performance of approximately 130 Mbps over the 155 Mbps network path.

Telstra's customer was so satisfied with the NetEx-Telstra global solution that they have recently contracted to connect another data center in Asia to further expand the solution, with more locations planned for future integration into the Global MPLS network.
