Cathay Pacific Carries Record Passengers and Cargo in 2005

Cathay Pacific carries record passengers and cargo in 2005

HONG KONG, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong's biggest carrier, Tuesday announced record passenger and cargo flows in 2005.

"The airline carried 15 million passengers on record in 2005, up 13 percent over 2004, a record year," said a press release issued by the airline Tuesday.

The volume of cargo carried by Cathay Pacific also set a record in 2005, increasing 15 percent to more than 1 million tonnes.

The airline also reported the growth of passenger capacity measured in terms of available seat kilometers, which increased 11.8 percent in 2005.

Cathay Pacific attributed the new records in passenger and cargo flows to continued investment in aircraft and network expansion.

Seven passenger aircraft joined the Cathay Pacific fleet last year, enabling more flights including a third daily service to Los Angeles, a fourth to London and additional flights launched to Amsterdam, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Nagoya, Perth, Singapore and Xiamen.

Two freighters were also added to the airline's cargo fleet and increased the cargo capacity by 12.9 percent.

Cathay Pacific has worked hard to position itself as Asia's No.1 combined passenger and cargo carrier and planned to purchase more aircraft to strengthen its fleet, business newspaper The Standard reported earlier.

Pressing ahead with future growth, the airline in December announced its biggest-ever acquisition of new aircraft with orders for 16 long-haul Boeing 777-300ERs and purchase rights on 20 more, plus three Airbus A330-300s for regional services.

"Cathay Pacific's fleet will total 100 aircraft in 2006, its 60th Anniversary year," said the company.

The airline now expects the peak demand of flights in late January, when more travels arranged during the traditional Chinese New Year holidays.
