New York transit union urges members to approve draft contract
NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Transport Workers Union (TWU) in New York on Tuesday called on members to ratify a tentative contract which followed last month's three-day city-paralyzing strike.
The executive board of the TWU approved the contract last Tuesday which calls for wage increases of three percent, four percent, and 3.5 percent over each of the next three years, but workers will now be required to pay into their health care coverage.
With ballots hitting the mail this week, Roger Toussaint, the union's president, is holding meetings around the city to talk members into giving the green light.
A closed-door meeting was held on Monday night and about 400 transit workers turned out to hear what Toussaint had to say.
The workers were said to harbor mixed feelings toward signing the draft contract, local media reported.
According to the new contract, the city's Metropolitan Transportation Authority gave up demands for concessions on pensions, while the workers would for the first time contribute 1. 5 percent of their pay to health care premiums.
New York's 34,000 transit workers staged a three-day strike last week at the height of the Christmas season. The strike, which was the city's first transit strike in more than 25 years, brought the dispute with the MTA over pay, pensions and health care to its climax.
