Road to Destruction

Once more the year begins with the road lobby pushing for more money to be spent on more roads (Jan 6). Anyone who still thinks that more roads equal less congestion need look no further than Auckland.
More roads equal more traffic, then more congestion, then yet more roads. This isn't an urban development strategy, it's an urban destruction strategy.
Fixing the city's transport problems isn't easy however you try doing it, but building more roads is one sure way to fail.
Anyone who went to the A and P Show or the New Brighton fireworks or went into town during the pre- Christmas rush got a preview of the chaos that we can look forward to if we carry on as we are.
Full marks to Garry Moore for suggesting solutions that don't involve road construction. Yes, we do deserve our fair share of Government transport funding, but don't squander it on roads; spend it wisely on something that works.
