FedEx Noise Study Deliberations Resume

Jan. 11--TRIAD -- Residents around Piedmont Triad International Airport may get a better idea later this month of how much protection they'll get from the aircraft noise of future FedEx Corp. cargo hub planes.

The consultants working since early 2004 on an aircraft noise study will present a draft noise compatibility program at meetings Jan. 24 at the Airport Marriott in Greensboro. The meetings of the three noise study committees will take place at the Airport Marriott.

The program is designed to lessen the impact of aircraft noise in neighborhoods in north High Point, western Greensboro and western Guilford County. Lead consultant Andy Harris said the program will include examining the use of runways by jets and flight corridors over populated areas to limit the intrusion of aircraft noise.

"What we have tried to do is protect the people closest in and reduce as much as possible the impact on north High Point," he said Tuesday.

Harris, a veteran aircraft noise consultant from Manchester, Mass., said he expects to wrap up the noise study during the first half of this year. The final steps will involve the committees making recommendations to airport officials, who in turn will file a plan with the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA, which will provide most of the funding to implement a noise compatibility program, must give the final approval.

Citizens advisory committee member Dennis Borugian of High Point said he's awaiting the specifics of the aircraft noise mitigation plan.

"It's a wait-and-see thing," he said. "Until we can see what the final report will include, it's hard to say how effective it's going to be."

Borugian, a north High Point resident, said he remains concerned that legitimate suggestions to address aircraft noise aren't being fully considered by the consultants hired by airport officials to spearhead the study.
