U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for Jan. 13: First Radio Broadcast

Posted on: Thursday, 12 January 2006, 09:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature for Jan. 13 from the U.S. Census Bureau:

FRIDAY, JAN. 13: FIRST RADIO BROADCAST

Profile America - Friday, Jan. 13. It's said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Take the word "wireless," for example. On this day in 1910, a small handful of New Yorkers were thrilled to hear the sound of opera star Enrico Caruso on the earphones of their homemade radio receivers -- coming not over a wire, but through the air. This first radio broadcast to the public was the work of a young genius named Lee DeForest. Today, "wireless" is again a buzzword, with wireless connection to the Internet and the rapidly growing popularity of cell phones, now carried by nearly 160 million Americans -- about 55 percent of the population. And more and more of the nation's nearly 11,000 radio stations send their programs over the Internet.
