Carrier Accepts Coaching Position With NFL's Ravens: Former USC Player Coached Cornerbacks for Sun Devils

By Matt Simpson, The Tribune, Mesa, Ariz.

Jan. 13--Arizona State cornerbacks coach Mark Carrier has accepted the position of secondary coach with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens after two seasons with the Sun Devils.

Mark Brand, ASU's assistant athletic director for media relations, said the move had been anticipated for almost a week and that Sun Devils coach Dirk Koetter is close to naming Carrier's successor.

"It's a great opportunity for Mark from a career standpoint," Koetter said.

"We wish him nothing but the best, and thank him for his time as a Sun Devil." ASU ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in passing defense in both of Carrier's seasons in Tempe, but his biggest impact may have been in recruiting.

The three-time NFL Pro Bowler had what Koetter called "name recognition" especially with recruits from the Southern California area.

Carrier attended Long Beach Poly High School and played collegiately at USC.

When hired, Carrier said of his alma mater, "They're on top but they're going to wonder what happened when I take a couple of their players (top prospects). And I will." However, of the roughly 20 Californians ASU has signed in its last two classes, none were considered serious USC recruits.
