Former State Legislator Given Leadership Award

Jan. 16--Former state legislator Jed G. Harris Jr. received the first John Brown Leadership Award last month from The African American Leadership Summit in Columbus, a think-tank for social issues, said Dr. J.A. Hud, a chairman of the group and founder of Project Rebound, Inc.

"Mr. Harris has been involved with trying to ensure that African-Americans have some economic opportunities in this community," Hud said. "For a number of years, he's even partnered with African-American business people and even when it was not popular."

Because this year marked the 10th anniversary of the Malcolm X Leadership Award, which honors unsung heroes, the group decided to initiate a John Brown Leadership Award, too. John Brown, a white abolitionist in the 1800s, is known for leading a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. Brown was captured by federal forces and executed. Some support Brown's actions as courageous and some critics deem him an extremist or fanatic.

"I give credit to my mother for teaching me to treat everyone the way I would like to be treated," said Harris, 51, who runs an independent insurance agency. He recalls growing up when schools in Columbus were segregated.

"We've come a long way, but it's a long road ahead before we can reach a point that we don't look at race," he said.

Robert Day, a long-time friend who helps operate a job training program for Columbus Consolidated Government, added his praises.

"Jed is a friend of the black community and he has worked very hard... to help bring social changes so that all citizens of Columbus can benefit from them. We are very proud and fortunate to have someone like Jed."
