WEATHER: Freezing Rain Returns: 1 to 4 Inches of Snow to Follow

Posted on: Monday, 16 January 2006, 09:00 CST

By Dale Stensgaard, Grand Forks Herald, N.D.

Jan. 16--Freezing rain returned to the forecast Sunday night, and 1 to 4 inches of snow were expected to follow overnight and today in the Grand Forks area.

The National Weather Service posted a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. today for all of North Dakota except the southeast.

In northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, winds of up to 25 mph were expected today along with a total of 1 to 4 inches of snow.

On top of freezing rain overnight, the snow and wind was expected to cause dangerous travel conditions.

In western and central North Dakota, freezing rain and 2 to 3 inches of snow, blown around by 30 to 40 mph winds, were expected to make travel hazardous. The winter weather advisory there is in effect until midnight tonight.

The cause of the weather is a low-pressure system moving through North Dakota and Minnesota, the weather service reported.

The next chance of snow in the area is Wednesday night and Thursday, the weather service said.

For the week, skies are expected to be partly to mostly cloudy. High temperatures will be in the 20s, the weather service said. Lows will range from the single digits above zero to the teens.
