Q: Computer recycling

I believe that I saw in your column names of places that take old computers for recycling. My husband has many old computers that he wishes to dispose of, and so I was wondering if I could get the names and addresses from you.

SoCal Computer Recyclers, 1430 240th St. in Harbor City, recycles computer equipment.

SoCal Computer Recyclers also accepts other electronic items, such as televisions, tape and video recorders, answering machines, speakers, stereos and typewriters.

For its hours and other information, call 310-626-8180 or visit its Web site, www.socalrecyclers.com.

Computer equipment also can be recycled at county-sponsored hazardous waste roundups or a city of Los Angeles SAFE Center.

Roundups are scheduled for Jan. 21 in Hermosa Beach, March 4 in Marina del Rey, March 25 in Manhattan Beach, April 29 in Hawthorne and May 6 in Rancho Palos Verdes.

For times, street addresses and other information on the county- sponsored roundups, call toll-free 888-CLEAN-LA or visit ladpw.org/ epd/ and www.lacsd.org.

Information about the SAFE Centers in the San Pedro and Playa del Rey areas is available by calling 800-98-TOXIC (800-988-6942) or visiting www.lacity.org/san/safe.htm.

Before recycling a computer, experts recommend using disk- cleaning software to remove personal information from your computer.

TechSoup.org, which provides technology assistance to nonprofit agencies, lists examples of and links to such software — both commercial and shareware — on its “Ten Tips for Donating a Computer.” Visit www.techsoup.org/products/recycle/index.cfm to access the article.
