Motorcyclist Dies in Accident on I-295 Near 103rd Street In St. Johns County, Collision on Palm Valley Road Leaves One Dead.

Two people died in traffic accidents in Duval and St. Johns counties Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A 35-year-old Jacksonville man died after his motorcycle struck another vehicle on southbound Interstate 295 just south of 103rd Street on the Westside. The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when the motorcycle changed lanes and collided with the left rear of the other vehicle, police said.

The motorcycle driver, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from his bike and struck a guardrail. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries occurred. The victim's name was not available.

The second accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Palm Valley Road at U.S. 1. Police said one person died in a collision involving several vehicles. No other information was available.

A man died following an explosion at the Seminole Electric coal plant north of Palatka on Saturday, said Sgt. Christi Wilkinson of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Wilkinson said the accident occurred about 11 a.m. at the plant off U.S. 17. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither the man's identity nor a cause of the accident were available.

Two people escaped injury after their small plane crashed on a private road in Putnam County Saturday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The 1969 Beechcraft was flying south toward the Palatka Airport about 3:30 p.m. when it ran out of gas, pilot Fitzhaugh L. Shelton told police. The plane's left wing struck two pine trees as it landed on Hercules Road, about 4 miles south of Bostwick.

After hitting the trees, the plane spun and struck a wooden gate post before stopping. Shelton, 49, of Pennsylvania, and passenger Margaret A. Schmid, 44, of Maryland, were both wearing seat belts and walked away from the accident.
