Singapore airport's passenger, cargo volumes reach new heights in 2005
SINGAPORE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Singapore Changi Airport received a new record of 32.4 million passengers in 2005, up 7 percent from the previous year, Minister of State for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua said here Tuesday.
Likewise, Changi's cargo throughput reached a new high of 1.83 tons, representing a 3.3 percent increase over 2004, Lim said at a celebration at the airport.
She noted that the addition of four new airlines and the return of two airlines in 2005 brought the airport's connectivity to an all- time high of 180 cities and 4,042 weekly scheduled flights.
Lim also announced that the government will set aside 300 million Singapore dollars (about 184 million U.S. dollars) over the next three years as the second phase of the Air Hub Development Fund.
The money will be used to launch new incentives, as well as to continue those adopted in the first phase such as rebates in landing fees and rental, to attract new airlines and encourage existing ones to expand their services at Changi.
To celebrate Changi Airport's 25th anniversary this year, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will upgrade the two terminals, improve the service standards, and organize a series of activities like shopping festival at the airport, according to the minister.
Changi Airport will see the inaugural commercial flight of the world's biggest passenger aircraft Airbus A380 later this year, while the construction of the airport's third terminal is expected to complete in 2008.
