Jan. 18--TOKYO -- Hitachi Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and Renesas Technology Corp. said Wednesday they will establish a joint company later this month to plan an independent semiconductor foundry business employing advanced fabrication processes.
The formation of the joint company, Advanced Process Semiconductor Foundry Planning Co., is in response to enormous investment required to build plants that produce system LSIs, the three companies said in a joint statement.
Advanced Process will study the feasibility of an independent chip foundry business to which the partners could effectively outsource fabrication of advanced system LSI products based on 65-nanometer or finer process technologies.
Following the six-month feasibility study, the three companies will decide whether to launch the foundry business.
Advanced Process will be initially capitalized at 100 million yen, which will be held 50.1 percent by Hitachi, 33.4 percent by Toshiba and 16.5 percent by Renesas, a joint semiconductor firm owned by Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
