County Treasurer is Reappointed to State Board

Jan. 19--Macomb County Treasurer Ted Wahby will continue to chair the state's Transportation Commission.

Wahby, who has served on the commission for five years, will remain chairman through 2008. He was first appointed to the seat by then-Gov. John Engler, and Gov. Jennifer Granholm reappointed Wahby on Jan. 12.

"It's obviously something where you want to serve," Wahby, 74, said Wednesday. "You want to be there. Transportation is an intricate part of our economy."

The six-member commission meets monthly in Lansing to discuss transportation issues throughout the state and set policy for the Michigan Department of Transportation to carry out. MDOT's immediate task will be trying to get thousands of out-of-towners in and out of Detroit during the Super Bowl.

The bigger, long-term challenge will be developing transit systems that will help residents deal with rising gas prices.

"Everybody is talking now with the gas and fuel, that we need to talk about good transit systems," said Wahby, a Democrat from St. Clair Shores. "I think that's something we're lacking in a lot of areas."

The commission also approves new roads or improvements to existing ones.

"We deal with policy, and the operations are handled by the MDOT," Wahby said. "If they're going to approve roads or different things, it comes before the commission."

Granholm also appointed James Scalici, 52, of Bingham Farms to his first term on the commission. Scalici, a Republican, owns American Construction Engineers.

The commission is scheduled to meet for the first time this year on Tuesday.
