Tianjin to host first Chinese port city mayors' summit

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese port city mayors' summit will be held on April 16 in north China's port city of Tianjin.

Co-sponsored by the Development Research Center of the State Council, the Tianjin municipal government, the Ministry of Communications and China Communications and Transportation Association (CCTA), the two-day summit will take "economic globalization and strategic opportunities for China's port cities" as its theme, said CCTA Chairman Qian Yongchang at a press conference here Wednesday.

Mayors of China's more than 120 coastal and riverside port cities, together with mayors or chief representatives from the world's top 20 port cities, will be invited to the summit.

The officials will exchange views on such topics as the development opportunities that economic globalization and China's economic growth will bring to the port cities, the sustainable development of port economies, coordinated development in port groups, logistics opportunities in port economies, and the construction of an international shipping center.

Qian said the summit will become an important event for China's port cities and help boost cooperation and exchanges between China's port cities and their foreign counterparts.

Currently, China has ten ports with a yearly thruput of more than 100 million tons.

In 2005, Shanghai port reported 440 million tons of thruput and became the world largest port.
