Should Congress create incentives to de-federalize the airport screening workforce? Should we expect more mergers and consolidation in the aviation industry? Why do foreign airlines file for bankruptcy protection in the United States? What are the latest developments in space launch liability?

These and other questions will be answered Feb. 2 at the American Bar Association Forum on Air & Space Law 2006 Update Conference. The one-day conference will be held at the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel in Washington, D.C.

High profile speakers include Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, slated as the keynote speaker at 8:30 a.m., who will discuss the possible changes in the industry through the eyes of an aviation policy leader; Bill Ayer, chairman and CEO of Alaska Air Group, who will tell the story of a major carrier well along in its restructuring operations, during the session luncheon; and Andy Steinberg, chief counsel for the Federal Aviation Administration who will moderate a panel discussion on policy updates and air traffic control modernization at 1:30 p.m.

Other sessions include Wall Street Perspective and Developments in Aviation Insurance and Litigation Trends, which will offer insights into airline growth, mergers and consolidation, and discussion of the latest trends in risk/terrorism insurance and space launch liability.

The ABA Forum on Air and Space Law was created in 1982 to provide vital and timely information in the aviation arena. The Forum's more than 1,500 members represent all areas of air and space law, including airlines, airports, labor, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Transportation, and NASA, and include lawyers practicing in corporate, regulatory, litigation, business and antitrust areas. The Forum holds educational programs and workshops each year along with its Annual Conference, and publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Air and Space Lawyer.
