By Kyodo News International, Tokyo

Jan. 23--TOKYO -- The trading house Sumitomo Corp. said Monday it and two other business partners have landed an order from the government of Bahrain for a $1.3 billion electricity generation and sea water desalination project.

The other partners are British power supplier International Power and Belgium energy company Suez Tractebel.

Sumitomo and its two associates will set up a company in Bahrain to run the project, with Sumitomo putting up 30 percent of the new firm's capital.

Under the project, the three will purchase an existing state-run desalination plant coupled with a fire-powered electricity generation plant. They will also add a new desalination plant, the Japanese trading house said.

The new plant is scheduled to be completed in November 2007.

The relevant facilities will eventually sell 405,000 tons of desalinated water to the Bahraini government per day, along with 1,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, it added.
