Yahoo Japan Posts Record High Sales, Net Profit for Oct-Dec. Qtr

Jan. 23--TOKYO -- Yahoo Japan Corp. said Monday both its group sales and net profit for the three months to last December rose to all-time highs on a quarterly basis with soaring revenue from its Web advertising business.

In a consolidated earnings report for the three-month period, the Internet portal operator said its sales rose 50.6 percent from a year ago to 46.6 billion yen, with net profit coming to 12.6 billion yen, up 36.7 percent.

Yahoo said revenue at its Web advertising operations rose 71.5 percent to 18 billion yen.

Its shopping division also fared well, with the number of online stores as of the end of last December more than doubling the figure a year ago. The division boosted its sales 93.5 percent to 5.2 billion yen.

The firm, which belongs to a business group led by Internet investor Softbank Corp., also released earnings projections for the entire business year to March, estimating sales at 175.2-178.4 billion yen and net profit at 46.3-47.9 billion yen.
