NAPERVILLE, Ill., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tellabs was listed as one of the top ten vendors of SONET/SDH equipment by independent telecommunications market research firm Heavy Reading. The listing was based on an analysis of each SONET/SDH equipment vendors' products and strategies using criteria that were derived from face-to-face interviews with carriers.
The strong Tellabs(R) 5500 NGX transport switch and Tellabs' ability to leverage a large installed base of digital cross-connects in North America were key factors that contributed to Tellabs' top ten listing. The Tellabs 5500 NGX transport switch impressed Heavy Reading with its "support for dense, scaleable TDM bandwidth management and switched Ethernet services." Also highlighted in the top ten listing was Tellabs' success in winning International business with its solid next-generation SDH solutions, which were commended for offering a "high degree of Layer 2 feature support and fully standards-based GFP, VCAT and LCAS."
As part of Heavy Reading's discussion with service providers, a picture of the ideal next-generation SONET/SDH network was created. Heavy Reading used this model as a way to judge Tellabs' offerings today - and as the basis of the methodology that ranked Tellabs on its technology selection, product line breadth, features and market power.
"Being part of Heavy Reading's top ten list means a lot to Tellabs because this list was based on direct input from our customers," said Jeff Schmitz, senior vice president of product line management for Tellabs North America. "Every day we are showing our customers how Tellabs is evolving our SONET product lines to stay inline with their network migration plans."
"Tellabs is committed to addressing network operator's most pressing needs. Innovative SDH solutions and exceptional customer care have proven a winning combination, and we are pleased that this is being recognized by Heavy Reading," said Bill Burns, vice president of sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
The Tellabs next-generation SDH technology is already in operation with more than 25 customers.
