TeraChip Demonstrates Industry's First AdvancedTCA(TM) 160 Gbps Dual Star System

Posted on: Wednesday, 22 October 2003, 06:00 CDT

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- TeraChip, a leading provider of next-generation switch fabrics, demonstrates an AdvancedTCA (ATCA) system, using the industry's first ATCA-compliant 160 Gbps fabric board at the Network Processors Conference (NPC) West, in San Jose, CA, Oct. 21-23, 2003.

With this announcement TeraChip proves the advantages of its ATCA-compatible backplane technology. No other vendor has commercial silicon for 160 Gbps fabric, which utilizes just 4 SerDes per 10 Gbps of transmission capacity, in the form of a standard XAUI channel. Whereas the competitors market systems up to 80 Gbps of capacity, with this announcement, TeraChip demonstrates a 320 Gbps system in a dual-star configuration. The switching fabric implements advanced load balancing and redundancy capabilities. With such capabilities the demonstrated system could be tailored for enterprise or carrier-class configurations.

At NPC West, TeraChip uses an off-the-shelf AdvancedTCA chassis from Schroff, equipped with the TeraChip switching fabric and line card extension cards. The extension cards are connected via coaxial cables to a variety of external third party 10 Gbps line cards with third party state-of-the-art packet processor and traffic managers. Each fabric board is built using just a single TeraChip 160 Gbps shared memory TCF16x10 device.

"TeraChip has adopted the mission of the PICMG(R) community to enable standardized modular solutions for the communications and computing industry," said Micha Zeiger, Founder and CEO of TeraChip. "With a TeraChip switching fabric, an OEM vendor can develop 160 Gbps or higher systems using an ATCA-compliant chassis. Advanced Switching and AdvancedTCA fit very nicely with our product plans and we are very excited by their adoption as industry standards."

The TeraChip demonstration will be on display at the TeraChip booth #312 at NPC West in San Jose, CA on October 21-23, 2003.
