Network Engines Provides Appliance Development Services to Proficient Networks for New Network Policy Engine

Posted on: Monday, 23 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

CANTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 2003--

Appliance Solution Extends Bandwidth Management Capabilities for

Enterprise Data Centers

Network Engines, Inc., (Nasdaq: NENG), a leading development, manufacturing and distribution partner for storage and security software and equipment providers, today announced that it is supplying Proficient Networks with appliance development services for the new release of Pathfinder software for the Network Policy Engines (NPE) appliance. In a separate press release, Proficient Networks today unveiled Pathfinder software release 2.2, which enables organizations to safely reduce WAN infrastructure costs and maximize end-to-end application performance.

The new release of Pathfinder includes the capability to manage bandwidth traffic that is inbound to an enterprise data center. The software is delivered on the easy-to-integrate Network Policy Engine (NPE) appliance, a rack-mounted platform that can be rapidly installed in a network environment. The solution directs routers to avoid end-to-end network congestion, putting unused capacity to work and using cheap bandwidth when it performs well.

"Because Network Engines supplies us with all the services necessary to integrate our Pathfinder software on a stand-alone hardware platform, we can focus 100 percent of our efforts on bandwidth management capabilities," said Mathew Lodge, senior director of marketing for Proficient Networks. "Delivering our software on a server appliance developed by Network Engines is a great benefit to our users because it ensures the best price-performance in the industry and is simple to install. We greatly value the engineering, manufacturing and fulfillment expertise of Network Engines. For example, in the important area of product support, because of their assistance we are able to be more responsive than our competitors by offering advance replacement of NPEs as part of a maintenance contract."

IT managers have consistently rated the installation of new software as one of the most time-consuming and difficult IT tasks. A stand-alone server appliance allows IT managers to rapidly deploy new software functionality into an enterprise environment without the need to reconfigure existing servers or add costly new enterprise resources.

"Proficient Networks is able to provide a unique capability to data canter managers," said Mike Riley, vice president of marketing and strategy of Network Engines. "The combination of their WAN cost containment and performance optimization software, packaged in a fully-integrated system, allows Proficient Networks to offer an effective solution in a simple-to-install unit. In today's demanding IT market, that's a real competitive advantage."
