TI Introduces Industry's First Fully Integrated, Single-Chip 100-Watt Digital Audio Amplifier
Posted on: Monday, 8 December 2003, 06:00 CST
DALLAS, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) announced today the release of the industry's first single- chip 100-watt (W) digital amplifier power stage. The new power stage will enable consumer electronics manufacturers to reduce system size and costs while improving the listening experience in a variety of consumer audio products, including home theater systems and DVD receivers. The new TAS5121 digital amplifier is the first available device to provide complete digital amplification by integrating a 100W MOSFET H-bridge onto a power stage. By using the TAS5121, manufacturers will simplify heatsink assembly and no longer need to parallel H-bridges to drive 100W output.
With efficiency ratings in excess of 90 percent, the new amplifier minimizes heat generation, as well as the heatsinking required, allowing audio manufacturers to reduce board space and manufacturing costs. With a signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) in excess of 100 decibels (dB), as well as low total harmonic distortion (THD), the TAS5121 delivers exceptionally clear output. The new power stage, used in combination with digital audio PWM processors from TI, provides maximum design flexibility.
"With the introduction of the new TAS5121 power stage, TI continues its strategy of supplying a broad range of digital amplifiers to help OEMs meet the end consumer's demands but at a cost-effective price point," said Jeff Akgul, Digital Audio marketing and application manager at TI. "The industry's first monolithic 100-watt amp demonstrates that TI continues to provide the technology its customers need for new digital audio products."
TI's PurePath Digital(TM) Audio Technology
The TAS5121 digital amplifier is based on TI's PurePath Digital technology, which allows consumer electronics manufacturers to build completely digital, end-to-end audio products with cutting-edge sound reproduction and the most lifelike sound in a compact form factor. By reproducing movie soundtracks or music exactly the way the artist intended, PurePath Digital technology offers the best in high-end digital entertainment to the everyday consumer. PurePath Digital technology complements other TI digital and analog products that support audio applications, such as digital signal processors (DSPs), switch mode power management and audio converters.
Availability, Packaging and Pricing
The TAS5121 digital amplifier is now available in volume quantities. The device is packaged in a 36-pin PSOP-3 and priced at $3.49 each in quantities of one thousand or more.
