Transition Networks Achieves Successful 125km Gigabit Ethernet Transmission over Fiber

Posted on: Monday, 13 October 2003, 06:00 CDT

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Transition Networks Inc., the conversion technology expert, today announced new Gigabit Ethernet media converters designed to transmit Gigabit Ethernet signals up to 125km over single-mode fiber optic cable. The release of these new extended reach converters follows the successful implementation into the network of one of Transition's larger European customers. These latest additions to the Gigabit Ethernet family of conversion products extend the company's media converter portfolio, offing customers the industry's most comprehensive selection of distances available.

"Until today, Gigabit Ethernet users were limited to distance links of 70km or less. We are pleased to offer customers the ability to extend their Gigabit Ethernet fiber links up to 80% further than competitive offerings," said Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing for Transition Networks. "Gigabit Ethernet is quickly replacing ATM as the backbone technology of choice among network professionals in both the Local Area Network and the Metropolitan Area Network. Now, our customers are able to extend the advantages of Gigabit Ethernet to more geographically disperse locations within their networks."

The new Gigabit Ethernet converters are available as a copper-to-fiber converter or a multi-mode to single-mode converter, with each offered in either stand-alone or Point System(TM) form factors. In addition, the 1000Base product features include Auto-Negotiation (both copper and fiber), AutoCross(TM), Link Pass Through(TM) and Pause.

Features

Auto Negotiation

Transition's Gigabit converters have been specifically designed to provide Auto-Negotiation (full vs. half duplex) in all 802.3ab compliant environments. The converters advertise their own capabilities to other devices on both the copper and fiber interfaces and automatically configure to the highest or best performance mode of interoperation.

AutoCross(TM)

AutoCross is directly targeted at easing the installation problems sometimes associated with media conversion and provides a means for the installer to make the connections without needing a crossover cable. AutoCross will automatically detect the "transmit" and "receive" sides of the circuit and automatically adapt to the correct MDI or MDI-X configuration. This is significant because without this feature, a simple mistake in connections can result in a large network problem, as there is no diagnostic device to detect where the incorrectly configured connection has occurred.

Link Pass Through(TM)

Normally, the first time network administrators hear about a problem is when the user reports it. The first thing an administrator will do is to check whether there is a link. Because many devices are unable to recognize downlink faults, a failed link may appear normal and mislead the administrator. This takes time and, in some cases, may require trips to various wiring closets located some distances apart. With Link Pass Through, interrupted communications are detected and reported to administrators who can issue a fix without having to leave their desks.

Pause

Networks always have different devices on different parts of the network. Sometimes a slower device on one part of the network will signal that it cannot handle the transfer rate and ask for a "break." Devices will then stop communicating and the transmission will resume later. Transition's media converters allow for the PAUSE identification and will pass PAUSE signaling unhindered allowing devices, which are pause enabled, to operate properly.
