Biophan to Exhibit Extensive Portfolio of MRI Compatible Biomedical Devices at Medical Device & Manufacturing West Trade Show
Posted on: Monday, 30 January 2006, 12:00 CST
Biophan Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: BIPH)(FWB: BTN), a developer of next-generation medical technology, announced today that it will exhibit its extensive portfolio of MRI compatible biomedical device technologies at the Medical Device & Manufacturing (MD&M) West conference, the world's largest trade show for medical manufacturing. The conference will be held in Anaheim, California from January 31 to February 2, 2006. The Company will highlight its technologies for MRI safe and image compatible stents, catheters, guidewires, pacemakers, neurostimulators and drug pumps. Biophan will also showcase the recently introduced MC-1000 SQUIGGLE(TM) controller and SQL Series SQUIGGLE(TM) motor, both of which are produced by New Scale Technologies as part of their non-magnetic, miniature ceramic line of motors. Biophan is the worldwide exclusive distributor of New Scale's products for medical applications.
"We will showcase our extensive portfolio of MRI compatible products to medical OEM decision makers from across the medical device industry at the MDM West trade show. Biophan has developed innovative technologies to make medical devices MRI compatible, thus providing a competitive advantage to a broad spectrum of medical devices," stated Michael Weiner, Biophan CEO. "Biophan's technology solves the dual problems of tissue heating and induced electrical voltages that make pacemakers and other devices dangerous for use with MRI. Our thin-film nanomagnetic particle coating technology provides a controllable 'magnetic' signal capable of creating an image of the coated device. The tiny SQUIGGLE(TM) motor products are also MRI safe and extremely efficient for OEM product designers."
About the SQUIGGLE(TM) Motor
The patented SQUIGGLE(TM) motor uses a threaded nut and screw to create precise linear movement in a very small space. Piezoelectric ceramic actuators create ultrasonic vibrations in the nut, causing the screw to rotate and translate with high precision. SQUIGGLE(TM) motors are smaller, more precise, less expensive and more efficient than conventional electromagnetic motors. In addition, they use 90 percent fewer parts and require no gear reduction, which eliminates many failure modes. This ceramic motor is fundamentally compatible with high magnetic fields including MRI chambers. SQUIGGLE(TM) motors are used in nanotechnology research, microelectronics, optics, lasers, biotechnology, medical devices, aerospace and defense, fluid control, and office/consumer products including mobile phone cameras.
About New Scale Technologies
New Scale Technologies, Inc. (www.newscaletech.com) makes miniature ceramic motors that enable our customers to create smaller products and research tools. Our piezoelectric SQUIGGLE(TM) motors are smaller, more efficient and more precise than conventional motors. With only seven parts and no gears, this patented piezoelectric motor design uses ultrasonic vibrations to create precise linear motion. New Scale's miniature motors are compatible with extreme environments including vacuum, very low (sub-Kelvin) temperatures, and high magnetic fields.
SQUIGGLE(TM) is a registered trademark of New Scale Technologies, Inc.
About Biophan Technologies
Biophan develops and markets cutting-edge technologies designed to make biomedical devices safe and image compatible with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment. The Company develops technologies that enable medical systems such as pacemakers, interventional surgical devices such as catheters and guidewires, and implants such as stents to be safely and/or effectively imaged under MRI. Biophan is developing these same technologies to provide new MRI contrast agents. Other applications include drug delivery and power systems which derive energy from body heat. Biophan also has an equity position in MYOTECH, LLC to assist in development and commercialization of an MRI compatible cardiac assist device - the MYO-VAD(TM). Committed to growth through innovation and developmental leadership, Biophan and its licensors now hold a total of 157 U.S. patents, licenses, or applications, plus international applications. This total includes 48 issued U.S. patents, 7 recently-allowed applications that will issue as patents in the near future, and 102 pending applications at various stages of examination at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The patents cover areas including nanotechnology (nanomagnetic particle coatings), medical device designs, radio frequency filters, polymer composites, thermoelectric materials, which generate electricity from, body heat, and photonics. Biophan has joint development and licensing agreements with Boston Scientific and NASA's Ames Center for Nanotechnology. Biophan's goal is to make all biomedical devices capable of safely and successfully working with MRI, and delivering other technologies, which will improve quality of life. Biophan is also listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BTN. For more information, please visit www.biophan.com.
