IBM Launches New Software to Help Organizations Automate Governance

Posted on: Tuesday, 31 January 2006, 09:00 CST

Building on IBM's initiative to help organizations govern their software and systems development, IBM today launched new software designed to help systems engineers manage their development environment and more easily comply with industry-specific regulations.

Built on Eclipse, IBM Rational Systems Developer helps organizations trace industry-specific regulatory requirements from design to implementation. With its support for the Rational software portfolio, Rational Systems Developer enables engineers to manage their software development process more comprehensively and integrate compliance mandates into the process automatically.

For example, in the defense space, Rational Systems Developer helps systems engineers comply with mandatory defense systems requirements -- the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) -- by providing standardized views and reports on the system architecture. Rational Systems Developer is also able to create a visual model of a system's software design and can automatically generate code from the design, thereby saving time and increasing accuracy in future projects. Other compliance and standards initiatives primed to take advantage of Rational Systems Developer include AUTOSAR, DoD5000 and Navy Open Architecture certification and accreditation processes.

Other key benefits include:

-- Less coding -- transforms a UML 2.0 graphical representation of code into C++, Java or CORBA enabling systems developers to write code-intensive applications more easily and with higher quality. -- Built on Eclipse -- provides developers with a vendor-neutral, open platform for Rational software and partners to build upon. The Eclipse platform helps architects, systems engineers, developers, and testers prepare their organization for a transition to SOA from a modular systems architecture. -- Integration with Rational software portfolio -- enables systems engineers to leverage industry leading process guidance, requirements management, change management, and testing capabilities and ensures their work is aligned with their organization's priorities and regulatory requirements.

"IBM is uniquely poised to connect multiple development teams through a secured, distributed environment," said Danny Sabbah, general manager, Rational Software, IBM Software Group. "Systems engineers rely on the IBM Rational Software Development Platform to collaborate and govern their overall software development process."

Business Partners Embrace Rational Software Portfolio

As a sign of support for IBM's latest software development tools, the following eight Business Partners are creating solutions optimized for Rational software. Many of these solutions are being validated by IBM's Ready for Rational Software program:

-- Wind River -- Wind River's Eclipse-based Workbench Development Suite leverages IBM Rational ClearCase and IBM Rational ClearQuest for device software development, debugging, testing and management. -- EmbeddedPlus Engineering -- DoorKeeper extends the Rational Software Development Platform withTelelogic DOORS integration allowing customers to continue using their existing requirements system. In support of the emerging SysML standard, EmbeddedPlus Engineering is providing support for SysML modeling and simulation/execution. -- Pathfinder Solutions -- the Pathfinder PathMate plug-in to Rational Systems Developer provides C, C++, and Java UML to code transformations enabling customers to go from model to code seamlessly for real-time and embedded systems. -- Coverity, Inc. -- use Rational software and Coverity to detect over 40 categories of crash-causing bugs, security vulnerabilities and concurrency errors as developers write code. -- Galorath Incorporated -- Using Rational software data from models, Galorath SEER generates realistic software project cost, schedule and staffing plans. -- PTC -- PTC Windchill works with Rational software to synchronize software development with mechanical and electrical design data, and provide an integrated solution to manage the explosion of software and electronics in next generation products. -- Flashline -- Flashline's software asset portfolio management solution extends IBM Rational Systems Developer to provide registration and governance for the architecture described under DoDAF, together with the components that fulfill the architecture. -- LogicLibrary -- Logidex integrates with IBM Rational Systems Developer to provide design-time, metadata repository and registry for management and governance of the production and consumption of software development assets.
