Plans for City Speed Cameras to Be Axed

Plans to site four new speed cameras along the A38 Tyburn Road in Birmingham have been dropped.

City council cabinet member Len Gregory, who refused to approve the proposal, said the cameras were not needed because there had been a decrease in the number of traffic accidents since the suspension of the Tyburn Road bus lane in July 2004.

The two sites proposed for the cameras – between Salford Circus and Bromford Lane and between Bromford Lane and Chester Road – were approved by the Department for Transport.

However, a report by council transportation officials, notes: “Since the DfT approved the sites, the West Midlands Police traffic data unit have reassessed the sites and found that there were insufficient accidents to justify cameras on the section between Wheelwright Road and Chester Road.”

Three other speed cameras on the A38 Bristol Road South, by South Road’ on the A4540 Ladywood Middleway, near Ledsam Street, and on the A45 Coventry Road, near Wells Road are also to be removed.

Six cameras are to be placed on roads across the city. They are: A453 College Road, King-standing’ A453 College Road, Oscott’ B4114 Washwood Heath Road’ East Meadway, Shard End’ Meadway, Shard End’ A34 Stratford Road, Sparkbrook.
