Feb. 4--PHELAN -- A construction accident left Verizon customers without phone service in Wrightwood, Phelan and Pinion Hills from 3 p.m. into the evening Thursday. Verizon spokesman Mike Page said construction workers accidentally cut fiber optic lines 21/2 miles south of Palmdale Road at Aster Road. He estimated that full service would be restored late Thursday night. "The communities of Phelan and Wrightwood are isolated," Page said. "They have a dial tone and telephone service locally. It is telephone service out to the world and to 911 that they do not have." Because residents were unable to call 911, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department launched an effort to notify residents of a contingency plan should they require emergency assistance. The Sheriff's Dispatch Center informed patrol deputies that if a citizen flagged them down in the affected communities, it was likely due to the inability to call for help. "Right now we're getting the word out through the radio stations and of course we're sending an advisory to the television stations as well because all the 249 and 868 prefixes are affected," said sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers at about 8 p.m. "That basically covers Wrightwood, Phelan and Pinion Hills. Cell phones are also affected." Residents left without 911 service were urged to go to the Phelan substation or to a local fire station with their emergencies, Beavers said. "Sometimes the emergency is such that the person can't leave their home ... to get any type of help. It's definitely critical and I know everybody is working on it to get the lines up and running," Beavers said.
