Smiths Station Pair Claims State Titles

Feb. 5--PRICEVILLE, Ala. -- Chris Bilbrew and Erica Whitby of Smiths Station each claimed state titles in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Indoor State Track & Field championships on Saturday.
Competing in Class 6A, Bilbrew won the 400 meters in 49.77 seconds to help the Smiths Station boys to a fifth-place finish with 33 points. Bilbrew also competed on the 4x800 and the 4x400 relay teams, which each finished third. The 4x800 team of Bilbrew, Spencer Ferguson, Tim English and John Neill finished in 8 minutes, 8 seconds. The 4x400 team of Bilbrew, Ferguson, English and Jimmy Freeman finished in 3:30.
Whitby won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inch to help the Lady Panthers to a sixth-place finish with 23 points. The 4x400 relay team of Jasmine Sheffield, Miriam Cobb, Ashley Lockhart, Creshayla Vann finished fourth in 4:14. Emilie Fischer finished seventh in the 1600 meters in 5:22.
Also in 6A, Central-Phenix City's Marquis Pernell took third place in the shot put with a throw of 48-5.
WRESTLING -- BARON ADVANCES
BREMEN, Ga. -- Pacelli's C.J. Baron finished first at the 145-pounds weight class at the Area 1-A wrestling tournament.
He advances to the state tournament as the top seed from the west.
Teammate Chris Turner finished sixth at 160, and Brookstone's Jeremy Lott finished fifth at 140.

Raven and Noel James combined for 43 points as Central-Phenix City warmed up for the upcoming area tournament with a win over rival Shaw.
