Vintela Extends Systems Management Server to Manage Unix with the Announcement of VMX

Posted on: Tuesday, 11 November 2003, 06:00 CST

LINDON, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 2003--

Vintela Management Extensions (VMX) will extend Microsoft System

Management Server (SMS) capabilities to include Unix systems.

IT Administrators will now be able to control both

Windows and Unix, using VMX with SMS 2003.

Vintela will offer attendees of Microsoft Corp.'s IT Forum in Copenhagen, Nov. 11-14, the first public demonstration of their VMX Enterprise Management solution. Vintela Management Extensions (VMX) is Vintela's new blended-platform integration solution that provides IT administrators the ability to manage a new array of platforms including UNIX(R) and Linux(R) systems through Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003.

Vintela has been working with Microsoft to provide world-class integration of Unix Identities into Active Directory, using Vintela Authentication Services (VAS). VAS, based on industry-standard technology such as Kerberos and LDAP allows users to implement a consistently secure infrastructure across all of their systems with consequent savings in cost and complexity.

Vintela is announcing the next step in providing users with an even greater range of control at IT Forum 2003 in Copenhagen. At this event, Microsoft is announcing its new SMS 2003 products together with a new partner-based approach to providing a broader range of function and user/device support. Vintela is pleased to be selected as the partner to provide integration to Unix systems.

David Wilson, president of Vintela, said, "SMS 2003 takes enterprise class management of Windows systems to a new level of quality and scalability. This co-operative project to integrate SMS and VMX will give customers a single solution with best-of-class specialization across Unix and Windows. We are very excited to be working with Microsoft to extend the scope of SMS management across all critical operating systems."

"Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 provides a comprehensive solution for change and configuration management for the Microsoft platform, enabling organizations to provide relevant software and updates to users quickly and cost effectively," said David Hamilton, director of the Enterprise Management Division at Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft is pleased to be working with Vintela to extend those capabilities across Unix platforms."

VMX is a significant industry development. It is built using Vintela technology that has already won awards for Best Systems Administration Tool at LinuxWorld; moreover, VMX is being designed around OpenWBEM, which has also won the award for best OpenSource project at LinuxWorld. This integration, through OpenWBEM, means that users of SMS not only have access to the functionality provided directly by Vintela, but potentially from other standard WBEM technology providers.

Vintela is planning a series of other announcements in the lead up to the release of the VMX product in the summer of 2004.
