Equinix Expands Industry-Leading Network Services Through Successful Deployment With Meriton Networks

OTTAWA, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Meriton Networks Inc., specialists in Agile Optical Networking, announced today that Equinix, Inc. , the leading provider of network-neutral data centers and Internet exchange services, has selected the Meriton 6400 OTP (Optical Transport Platform) to link its Internet Business Exchange(TM) (IBX(R)) centers in the Los Angeles area. Touted as the "Home of the Internet," Equinix is widely recognized as the leading provider of central hubs for more than 200 networks serving over 90% of the world's Internet networks. The world's largest web presences operate at Equinix, including organizations such as Google and Yahoo!
The Los Angeles deployment builds upon an earlier 6400 OTP network that links Equinix's Silicon Valley area IBX centers. In early 2005, Equinix deployed several 6400 OTP systems to add capacity to its existing SONET rings, and to support the high growth in Gigabit Ethernet traffic. Impressed with the success of the original deployment, Equinix elected to leverage the strengths of the 6400 OTP for its Los Angeles area centers.
A number of key capabilities drove Equinix to select the 6400 OTP: - Network Efficiency: the ability to aggregate multiple Gigabit Ethernet wavelengths onto a 10 Gb/s wavelength - Service Flexibility: the use of pluggable optics and multi- service/multi-rate line cards provides Equinix with per-port service flexibility with minimal line card investment. Equinix uses the 10G ADM on a Wavelength Transponder Card to aggregate multiple OC3/12/48 onto 10G wavelengths, the 10G GFP ADM Transponder Card to aggregate GigE, Fibre Channel, FICON, ESCON and DVB-ASI signals onto a 10G wavelength, and the 10G Multi-Service Transponder Card to support OC192, 10 GigE- LAN-WAN. - Simplified, Dynamic Provisioning: the ability to realize operational savings through automated remote provisioning of wavelengths that are as easily provisioned as SONET circuits - One-time Engineering: the ability to add capacity, wavelengths and even additional nodes to the network without having to re-engineer the entire optical ring - World-class Support and Service: protection of its reputation for excellence among Equinix's Fortune 500 customer base
"I can't stress enough the operational advantage of true ROADM over traditional DWDM systems," comments Lane Patterson, director of research and development for Equinix. "In all aspects, from tunable lasers, pluggable optics, self-adjusting power equalization, and end-to-end GMPLS-enabled service provisioning, we found the Meriton 6400 OTP to exceed our demanding needs, supporting carrier-class operation with minimal operations and support resources."
"The growth of the metro area link service has been strong - in less than one year, we have more than doubled our link port capacity to accommodate the high demand for the service," adds Mylene Timblin, product manager at Equinix. "Meriton's ability to seamlessly perform in-service upgrades and equipment expansions allowed us to keep up with this demand, and we are excited to deploy this system for the benefit of our customers in the Los Angeles metro area."
"In the arena of network interconnection, Equinix is a true leader," said Bill Gartner, chief operating officer of Meriton Networks. "With Agile Optical Networking from Meriton as its foundation, Equinix can offer new high- bandwidth services faster and with lower operational costs."
The Meriton 6400 OTP - the industry's first and most widely deployed multiservice ROADM - has a fully automated optical layer that dramatically simplifies installation, management, provisioning and maintenance for companies like Equinix. And, unlike other ROADM systems on the market today, the 6400 OTP has jumper-free installation and provisioning, greatly reducing time-to-service, operational expenses and provisioning mistakes.
