Cisco Receives 2005 Frost & Sullivan Market Leadership Award in the Enterprise Router Market

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Frost & Sullivan's recent research of the World Enterprise Router Markets recognized Cisco Systems with the 2005 Market Leadership Award for leading the enterprise router market. Cisco has led this market for many years in innovation, growth rates, and mindshare.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a company that has exhibited market leadership through the implementation of market strategy. The Award recognizes excellence in all areas of the market leadership process -- identification of market challenges, drivers and restraints, as well as strategy development and methods of addressing these market dynamics.
"Cisco maintains its leadership through the development of new technology and products, and participation in standard's bodies and partnerships," says Frost & Sullivan Strategic Analyst Shirley Hunt. "This strategy allows it to expand into new product areas, such as voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and IPTV, which increase demand for its base products."
Cisco has a broad line of enterprise routing products, including multiprotocol high-end chassis routers, WAN edge/access routers, mid-range modular and low-end fixed "Integrated Services Routers" for enterprise branch offices and small to medium businesses. Cisco integrates security, application delivery, voice features and wireless into every one of its products. Its security product strategy -- the Cisco Self-Defending Network initiative -- helps build networks that can identify threats and automatically react to them in a manner that is appropriate to each threat's severity level. Cisco has developed market leadership in security and voice and has gained great momentum in these advanced technologies as integrated components to its routing and switching technologies. This systems approach allows Cisco to offer customers a great operational and functional advantage through tighter solutions integration.
Cisco also requires that every product pass extensive tests before being released to customers. Its independent testing and incident response group, called the product security incident response team (PSIRT), strives to discover and remediate issues affecting its products. The team announces major vulnerabilities to the public, even if there have been no reported problems from the customer end, and obtains software patches to distribute to customers. These services help ensure that Cisco's products remain up-to-date against any new security attack that threatens the network. Additionally, Cisco tests externally its solutions to ensure its tightly coupled security features significantly differentiate its voice offering to provide more resilient voice, video and data services.
Furthermore, the Cisco Services Oriented Network Architecture (SONA) was created to de-emphasize the network stand-alone boxes and instead emphasize the value of the network architecture and its intelligent services that provides support for more efficient business processes and applications to the customers, across their enterprise. Since at least 75 percent of the company's revenues still come from basic devices within the network (routers and switches), it needs to introduce solutions for customers to increase patronage of its services and products. These products include video and VoIP. "By understanding that customers buy ideas and applications that help their business grow, Cisco has tapped into a long-term growth strategy for its own product lines," concludes Hunt.
