ATLANTA, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Black Family Channel, the only wholly owned African-American cable network, announced today that it will pre-empt its regularly scheduled programming on Tuesday, February 7 at 12:00 noon (ET) to broadcast the funeral services of civil rights activist, Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Black Family Channel will bring its viewers "live", uninterrupted and commercial free coverage of the ceremony in its entirety. The program will re- air on the network at 12:00 midnight (ET). Observances are being held at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Lithonia, Georgia, where the youngest King daughter, Bernice, is an Elder under the leadership of Bishop Eddie L. Long. "It is important that we continue our mission to deliver historically significant and meaningful programming to our viewers. Our commitment is to provide, produce and promote relevant programming that addresses the needs and concerns within the black community and the nation," stated Lisa Morgan, Vice President of Marketing for the Black Family Channel.
Thousands of mourners are expected in Atlanta to attend the homecoming celebration of the first lady of the civil rights movement. However, millions will not be able to attend the ceremonies of Coretta Scott King, a human rights advocate and freedom marcher who carried the torch for international peace, equality and economic justice. Black Family Channel is covering the live broadcast in its entirety for those who are unable to attend and pay their respects in person. "It is our responsibility to provide programming to our viewers that is not readily available or widely reported," stated Michele Clark Jenkins, Vice President of Programming for the Black Family Channel. "Our Network exists because of the King family and other civil rights leaders who cleared the way for our existence. This 'live' broadcast is our way of honoring Mrs. Coretta Scott King's life, suffering and sacrifice for all of humanity," continued Jenkins.
