DYMEC's 7-Series Software Empowers Secure Multi-Protocol Substation Networks

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- DYMEC, Inc., the leader in purpose-built multi-protocol networking for power substations, announces new 7-Series software for its DynaStar networking systems, and new technology partnerships with FreeWave Technologies and Bow Networks. These combined new capabilities extend cyber-security protections across both Internet Protocol and other technologies and facilitate the transition from dedicated legacy SCADA communications to integrated substation networking.
DynaStar's unique SCADA Frame Forwarding technology enables network integration of routed and non-routed protocols for SCADA and other substation automation applications using digital facilities or frame relay services. The new DynaStar MPOSR capability (Multi-Protocol Over Serial Radio) extends this multi-protocol integration over cost-effective serial radio facilities. Related 7-Series enhancements include a per-connection encryption option and a new TCP-FR Host Gateway capability that allows IP/Ethernet-based SCADA masters to use SCADA Frame Forwarding on wide area links to remote serial devices.
To facilitate customer implementations of DynaStar radio-based networks, DYMEC has entered into a value added reseller agreement with FreeWave Technologies. FreeWave is a leader in extended temperature-range spread-spectrum radio products. The reseller agreement includes both serial and Ethernet radio products and development of embedded OEM radios in future DynaStar platforms.
DynaStar 7-Series enhancements also address growing cyber-security concerns and mandates for critical infrastructure networks. New capabilities address perimeter, port and management level security across both routed and non-routed applications. Perimeter security now includes IPsec VPN enhancements and frame relay Link encryption, in addition to existing IP Firewall capabilities. Ethernet port security (static and learned static MAC) has been added to VLAN and dedicated serial port connectivity protections. A new downloadable event log for management console activity and configuration change activity enables event archival and auditing for regulatory compliance.
Extending this cyber-security focus, DYMEC also announces a reseller agreement with Bow Networks for IED-Anywhere(TM), a secure access management product. IED-Anywhere(TM) provides centralized administration of user passwords and access profiles, facilitates user navigation of large substation networks, and provides an optional link to RSA servers for SecureID two-factor user authentication. Special versions of IED-Anywhere(TM) will be offered for secure console management of large DynaStar networks.
"Most utilities are moving towards a converged IP/Ethernet communications network and dealing with related cyber-security issues, but they are also concerned with asset protection and technology transition for their established SCADA systems and serial-mode substation devices," said John Shaw, President of DYMEC. "Our new product and partner announcements address these combined objectives, enabling secure multi-protocol substation networks."
