Library Gets 1 Bid for Naming Rights: An Anonymous Person Pledges $325,000 on the Online Auction Site to Help the Center in Womelsdorf Expand.

Feb. 8--At least one person is willing to spend $325,000 for the right to name the Womelsdorf Community Library.

About a week after library trustees launched an eBay auction for the naming rights, the first bid came in late Monday night.

The library board plans to use the auction proceeds to help pay for an expansion of the library at 203 W. High St., Womelsdorf.

Board member MaryAnne C. Beamesderfer saw the bid on her home computer about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

"There it was," she said. "I'm thinking, 'This is wonderful.' "

Trustees don't know who submitted the bid, and eBay is keeping bidders' identities private.

The auction began Jan. 30.

The library set the starting bid at $325,000 with a reserve price of $375,000. That means the board can decide whether to accept any bid under $375,000.

The winner will get to name the library, although library officials have said the name Womelsdorf would probably still be included.

Library trustees could reject any name they deem inappropriate.

As of Tuesday night, the eBay page listing the Womelsdorf library had been viewed more than 1,900 times, but just one bid was entered.

The auction ends Thursday.

Board member Betsy Hedbavny said library officials were happy to see the first bid.

"We were very excited and certainly hopeful that maybe it will generate more bids," she said. "There's somebody out there who thinks libraries are important."

The money would go toward the board's plan to expand the 2,000-square-foot building to more than 5,000 square feet; install a new heating system; renovate an emergency stairway; and build a new parking lot.

Library officials plan to seek construction bids in March.
