Cingular Wireless Supports Action in Congress to Stop 'Cell Phone Records Ripoffs'

Posted on: Wednesday, 8 February 2006, 18:00 CST

ATLANTA, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee's Consumer Affairs, Product Safety, and Insurance Subcommittee held a hearing on protecting consumers' phone records.

Cingular Wireless continues to take aggressive action to stop "Cell Phone Records Ripoffs" --- the unauthorized sale of customer phone records. Last month Cingular obtained Temporary Restraining Orders against the operators of websites including locatecell.com, celltolls.com, peoplesearchamerica.com, datafind.org, and efindoutthetruth.com. Cingular believes that data brokers - perhaps more appropriately called "data burglars" - typically attempt to obtain customer records through "pre-texting." For example, the fraudster may call customer service and pose as a telephone operator helping a customer with hearing disabilities or who recently underwent throat surgery.

The following comment may be attributed to Kent Wells, vice president - federal legislative affairs, Cingular Wireless.

"Cingular shares a common goal with Congress - to protect consumer privacy. That is why Cingular supports enactment of tough new laws to criminalize the practices being used by the data burglars and any others who sell stolen phone records. We commend Congress for its attention to this important issue."
