Alcatel to Enable Interactive Mobile Music and Video Services for StarHub in Singapore

Posted on: Monday, 13 February 2006, 09:00 CST

BARCELONA, Spain, February 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced it will supply a complete end-to-end interactive Mobile Music Solution to StarHub, Singapore's second largest operator, which offers a full range of communications and entertainment services over fixed, cable, mobile and Internet platforms. StarHub will be the first operator in the world to deploy Alcatel's leading-edge interactive Mobile Music Solution, delivering a truly interactive, personalized mobile music and video experience to its mobile customers. This will empower them to listen to, watch and download their favorite music on their mobile phones anytime, anywhere.

Alcatel's interactive Mobile Music Solution is designed to work seamlessly on different networks, providing an enhanced end-user experience. On GPRS/EDGE networks, a WAP-based music experience allows the end-user to easily navigate through predefined playlists streamed directly to his mobile phone. On 3G networks, a rich media client enables the subscriber to personalize his/her own channels or playlists, listen to music whilst watching music video clips, and cross-purchase all artist and song-related items, such as the full-track songs, music video clips, wallpapers, ring tones, ring back tones, etc.

Alcatel's interactive Mobile Music Solution is powered by Alcatel's industry-leading Streaming Server technology, designed and developed by PacketVideo Network Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcatel. This technology provides an enhanced end-user experience through major advances in performance, quality and device compatibility. For performance improvement, Alcatel's server provides a server-side playlist that enables users to combine streams from multiple sources in a single session and deliver it to their preferred devices, for uninterrupted enjoyment of their music collection. Moreover the server-side playlist functionality reduces the time needed to switch to a new clip. In a benefit for operators, Alcatel's server-side playlist provides the ability to insert adverts at various points in the playlist session, thus offering the possibility to generate additional revenues.

For quality enhancement, Alcatel's support for the AAC+ audio codec enables customers to enjoy music with superior audio quality, even at lower bit rates. Boosting device compatibility, Alcatel's solution complies with 3GPP standard specifications, and thus delivers music and video content to 3GPP devices, offering end-users a wider choice of devices for experiencing the music and video service.

Chan Kin Hung, Senior Vice President, Mobile Services, StarHub, said: "Mobile music is an exciting new experience for our customers and we didn't want to stop at enabling our customers to simply download music tracks on handsets. We want to deliver a complete mobile music experience, providing much more than what they currently get from MP3 players. By working with Alcatel, we will be able to empower customers to listen to, watch and download their favourite music related content from full tracks, true tones to video clips on their handsets, wherever, whenever. We are excited to be a pioneer in delivering this new wave of mobile music experience to customers."

"As the leading supplier of innovative mobile music and video applications, Alcatel is proud to partner with StarHub in delivering such innovative and exciting services that enhance the user experience," added Marc Rouanne, Chief operating officer of Alcatel's mobile communications activities. "We will continue to deliver next-generation applications as 3G gains momentum across the region."

Alcatel's music and video solutions have already been adopted by more than 80 mobile operators in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America to enable their mobile video, music and live TV services.
