Broadcom's DBS/DVR/HDTV Silicon Technology Enables Award-Winning Products at Consumer Electronics Show

Posted on: Friday, 9 January 2004, 06:00 CST

LAS VEGAS, Consumer Electronic Show, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation , a leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that the HD-DVR250 model DIRECTV(R) HD DVR utilizes the Broadcom(R) BCM7037, a highly integrated high- definition (HD) digital video recording (DVR) chip for satellite and cable set-top box applications. The HD-DVR250 model DIRECTV HD DVR, manufactured by Hughes Network Systems, received the Best of Innovations award in the Satellite Systems category by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

This is the third consecutive year that Broadcom(R) products have enabled award-winning CEA products. Best of Innovations honorees will display their products in the Grand Lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show, January 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The BCM7037 enables the advanced HD video/audio/graphics and DVR capabilities in the HD-DVR250 model DIRECTV(R) HD DVR. One of the first products on the market to combine the best HD and DVR capabilities in a set- top box, the DIRECTV(R) DVR with TiVo(R) service applies familiar DVR functionality to DIRECTV and off-air ATSC high-definition programming, including the ability to record, pause, rewind and watch instant replays of live television. The new DIRECTV box features a much larger recording capacity than existing DIRECTV DVRs, and features component and digital video outputs for enhanced audio and video.

"Broadcom has established a strong record with us in delivering the key scalable silicon solutions for our hugely popular standard definition DVR boxes," said Laura O'Donnell, Vice President of Product Management for DIRECTV, Inc. "The BCM7037, combined with Broadcom's system engineering support, now adds to this distinguished record, thus continuing to set us apart from our competition."

"The integration and performance we have achieved in the BCM7037 offers manufacturers an economical solution for the convergence of HDTV and DVR in a single box," said Rich Nelson, Vice President of Marketing for Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group. "DIRECTV's HD-DVR250 model DIRECTV(R) HD DVR elevates the television viewing experience for consumers by offering them significantly improved HDTV video and graphics as well as for the first time HDTV flexibility with personal viewing options."

The BCM7037 provides manufacturers with a cost-effective solution for HD and SD video with support for a DVI/HDMI output interface, digital audio and 2D / 3D advanced graphics systems common to cable and satellite applications. The DVR capability, also known as PVR, enables watch and record, personal viewing and scheduling, video-on-demand (VOD), and VCR "trick mode" effects on any stream. The chip has built in software driver support for the industry's leading PVR platform, TiVo(R), and also has built in encryption support to ensure copy protection of recorded programming content.
