German Machine Maker LSW Maschinenfabrik Switches to SolidWorks Software

Posted on: Wednesday, 15 February 2006, 09:00 CST

LSW Maschinenfabrik GmbH, a German manufacturer of high-end assembly systems for the automotive industry, has purchased 80 licenses of SolidWorks(R) CAD software, gaining exponential performance improvement for its work with complex parts and large assemblies.

After thorough benchmark testing, the company, part of the German IWKA Group, switched from Autodesk(R) Inventor software to SolidWorks, a decision that benefits engineers in LSW's Bremen headquarters and at its American subsidiary, B&K Corp., in Michigan.

"We've had several discussions within the IWKA Group about performance differences between SolidWorks and Inventor," said Holger Jenning, head of engineering at LSW. "In a benchmark test with complex casting parts and large assemblies, we documented a performance improvement with SolidWorks of three to seven times. This test convinced us that SolidWorks software was the best choice for our company."

One of SolidWorks software's main advantages proved to be its speed in converting solid models into 2D drawings, an important step in design cycle efficiency already witnessed in other sectors of the IWKA Group. "Because we already have several well-established SolidWorks installations in the IWKA Group, we can benefit from the experiences of our affiliated companies," said Peter Walter, one LSW's managing directors. "We definitely made the right decision to standardize on SolidWorks."

LSW Maschinenfabrik's assembly systems produce engines, cylinder heads, axles, transmissions, steering systems, and other components.

"The more complex the part or assembly, the more critical it is to possess high-performing design software," said Rainer Gawlick, SolidWorks Corporation's vice president of worldwide marketing. "SolidWorks Corporation appreciates this important ease-of-use and time-to-market consideration as more companies are under pressure to more quickly design sophisticated products for their customers."

LSW Maschinenfabrik works with SolidWorks reseller DPS Software for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.
