India's fastest train put into operation
NEW DELHI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav flagged off the country's fastest train from here Tuesday.
The train, New Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express, connects Indian capital New Delhi to central Indian city of Bhopal, and has the top speed of 150 kilometers per hour.
The fastest trains in India until now run at 120 kilometers an hour. The increase in speed will reduce the travel time between the two cities from two hours and 15 minutes at present to less than two hours.
According to Northern Railways Chief Public Relations Officer Rajiv Saxena, the train has a running power locomotive of 5,440 horsepowers.
The technology used is such that even at 150 kilometers per hour, the train consumes less energy than trains running now at 120 kilometer per hour.
The coaches are new and have 10 percent more seating capacity than present Indian coaches.
The seats are inclined and have more leg room than current trains.
It has an intelligent air conditioner that senses the requirement and keeps adjusting to maintain temperature as doors are open and closed.
The service will be extended to other areas after the success of the train is tested.
The train has a special engine and powerful brakes to ensure safety even at high speeds. It has an interlocking anti-climbing device to prevent carriages from climbing on each other in case of an accident. The train will run six days a week.
