Norfolk State No Match for Hampton's Inside Game

Feb. 17--NORFOLK -- Norfolk State was no match for Hampton's inside game as the Pirates scored 42 points in the paint to beat the Spartans 79-69 at Echols Hall.
Hampton (5-18, 5-9 MEAC) outrebounded the Spartans 58-30 and had 24 second-chance points. Forward Shahara Johnson led the Pirates with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Indian River grad Linda Rickenbacker also contributed with 10 points.
The Pirates trailed for much of the first half but opened the second half with an 8-0 run and never looked back.
Norfolk State (7-16, 4-10 MEAC) tied the game at 38 with 16:45 but Hampton went on an 11-4 run to take a lead it would never lose. The Pirates have now won eight of the last nine meetings.
Toia Johnson scored 19 points to lead four Spartans in double figures. Brenda McClary scored a career-high 16 points and Areya Walker, an Ocean Lakes grad, finished with 12. Guard Ashley Bowman also contributed with 11 points and a career-high 10 assists.
