Egyptian Transport Minister Discusses Ways to Contain Bird Flu Disease

Cairo, 18 February: [Egyptian] Transport Minister Eng. Muhammad Lutfi Mansur has said that the ministry, through the affiliated port authorities, has taken every precaution to contain the bird flu disease.

In a statement today, the transport minister said that he discussed today, Saturday, with the chairmen of the maritime transport sector and Egyptian port authorities in the Red Sea, Alexandria, Port Said and Damietta, all the relevant precautions which need to be taken.

At the same time, the transport minister asked the chiefs of the maritime transport sector and Egyptian ports authorities to prepare a comprehensive list, in coordination with the health and veterinary quarantine agencies, of the consignments of live and slaughtered birds coming to Egypt, in line with the political leadership's instructions to contain the bird flu disease.

The transport minister stressed that the relevant precautionary and preventive measures must be taken and the quantities [of birds] coming into the country, both live and slaughtered, must be identified. He underlined the measures that were taken by the ports authorities and assisting agencies.

The transport minister pointed out that a decision had been taken to set up an operation room to receive urgent reports from Egyptian ports authorities about any consignments of birds that had recently entered the country from any country in the world.
