Feb. 18--Northwest horticultural expert Marianne Binetti will begin a series of three weekly "Waterwise Gardening" classes Tuesday that will run through March 7. The classes are sponsored by the city of Olympia, which has offered similar springtime classes for about seven years, said Tikva Breuer, who heads the city's conservation program. "We're trying to show people that you can grow a beautiful lawn and garden, and protect our water resources," she said. "Basically anyone who loves gardening will love these classes." Binetti is a longtime master gardener in Enumclaw who has written eight gardening books. She also writes a weekly syndicated gardening column that The Olympian publishes. The classes will include her advice on choosing shrubs that love the Northwest's weather, winning the "weed wars" naturally, and redesigning a lawn to save time, money and water resources. Practical pest control and fertilizers also will be covered. "What people don't realize is that they'll be so much more successful in their gardens if they use proper gardening techniques instead of just grabbing something off the shelf to use in their garden," Binetti said.
Space is limited in the two-hour classes, so those interested should try to register as soon as possible. "We're going to make it really fun, and they can win lots of door prizes," she said. "But mostly it's to become more educated in proper and healthier ways to garden."
