CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) -- A new online message board will allow students in Rhode Isand to send words of encouragement to U.S. troops overseas.
R.I. Secretary of State Matt Brown introduced the message board at an event Tuesday at Rhode Island National Guard headquarters in Cranston.
Brown said the messages posted for the troops will serve as "inspiration and comfort." Troops can reply to the students by sending e-mail messages to their schools.
Named "A Message Makes a Difference," the board was developed by the secretary of state's office. It started as a pilot program with the Coventry Middle School after the recent deployment of the Coventry-based 281st Communications Group of the Air National Guard.
Messages from Coventry students already posted on the site offer thanks to those serving and hopes for their quick return home.
"We all know why you are out there, to protect us from the terrorists. We hope you all are safe and you are in our hearts always," wrote one student.
"You make it possible for us to live our everyday lives while you risk your lives for us," wrote another Coventry student.
The school's principal and a teacher also offered messages of support.
"We are all proud of you and stand behind you with pride for all you are doing," wrote Donna Beaudoin, a Coventry teacher.
Several Coventry Middle School students helped demonstrate the site at Tuesday's event. Brown plans to expand the program to schools around the state.
The board will be accessible from the secretary of state's Web site and the Rhode Island National Guard's Web site.
