U.S. Patent Office Grants GIPS Two Patents for Technology Designed Specifically for Packet Networks

Posted on: Tuesday, 21 February 2006, 09:00 CST

Global IP Sound (GIPS), the leading provider of embedded voice-processing solutions for the Voice over IP (VoIP) market, today announced that the U.S. Patent Office has granted the company two patents for key technology behind GIPS broadband codecs and voice quality enhancement features. The patents were issued to GIPS for the company's unique predictive coding technique and for its innovative speech detection method.

"Once again Global IP Sound has shown that its patented solutions directly solve the intricate voice quality problems that exist in IP communications, and that the company continues to innovate to meet the needs of its customers," said Roar Hagen, Chief Technical Officer and co-founder of Global IP Sound. "These patents offer more evidence of the ingenuity and creativity that users worldwide recognize as the hallmarks of GIPS technology."

These new patents have allowed for the design of the highest-quality speech codecs and some of the most innovative voice quality enhancement features available in the VoIP market today. One patent introduces a distinctive and groundbreaking method that uniquely combines predictive coding and lossless coding methodologies to reduce the codec bit rate, while maintaining the quality of the data. The other patent rewards an innovative technique based on statistical methods for detecting speech activity that enables high quality, low complexity solutions to only transmit data when the module has sensed that a user is speaking.
