Foundry Networks and Yankee Group MAP 10 Gigabit Ethernet Applications And Market Drivers

Posted on: Thursday, 22 January 2004, 06:00 CST

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A new report from The Yankee Group on 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) Deployment Strategies is now available by registering at the Foundry Networks(R) website: http://www.foundrynetworks.com/yankeegroup. Foundry Networks , as the leading market supplier of 10GbE systems, commissioned the Yankee Group to author this report including interviews with several of the company's more than 125 10GbE customers worldwide.

Aimed at IT managers and network administrators, the report outlines current trends driving widespread adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology, including:

-- exponentially growing demand for bandwidth to support new network

applications

-- expansion of storage area networks outside of the data center, and the

move away from server-centric computing models

-- growth of Metro Area Networks (MAN)

-- increasing use of utility computing

-- high-bandwidth requirements of both grid and cluster computing

The report also predicts the new 10GbE Wide Area Network Physical Layer (WAN PHY), an extension of the IEEE 802.3ae standard, will provide seamless connectivity to bridge Ethernet to SONET/SDH infrastructure. Slated for delivery this year, the 10GbE WAN PHY will enable OC-192 speeds and performance at a fraction of the price for metro Ethernet providers, metro Ethernet campus/regional networks and their customers. The WAN PHY also allows Ethernet service origination and termination in native Ethernet framing, creating a true "virtualization layer" for on-demand, utility computing.

"The growing performance and speed requirements of both enterprise servers with embedded Gigabit over Copper connectivity and WAN services will benefit from 10GbE's ability to integrate public and private networks, resulting in unification of the LAN, MAN and WAN," said Zeus Kerravala, author of the Yankee Group report. "Availability of the 10GbE WAN PHY standard will allow Ethernet to carry storage, voice, video and other business-critical application traffic at high-speed LAN rates while allowing both enterprise customers and service providers to create a consistent, high-speed network with simplified management."

Report Gives IT Managers Practical Advice to Adopting 10GbE

The Yankee Group report offers the following recommendations to IT managers planning future 10GbE network deployments:

-- Architect networks with simplicity and manageability in mind.

Manageability using native Ethernet services is the cornerstone of any

intelligent network. An end-to-end Ethernet network provides the

necessary foundation to simplify management tasks.

-- Consider the 3-5 year track record and near-term future when choosing

your 10GbE vendor. End users should choose a vendor with a strong

track record that has designed a portfolio of LAN, MAN and WAN

platforms with the future in mind, which can support multilayer network

transport with backplane speeds of up to 40 Gb and plans to support

high densities of Gigabit Ethernet with a roadmap for 100GigE or more

to ensure long-term investment protection.

-- Service providers need to include native Ethernet services in their

portfolio of offerings. High-speed Ethernet services will become a

critical component of any service provider that wants to provide

end-to-end services to large enterprises.
