JDSU Adds FTTx Triple-Play Test Capability to Modular HST-3000 Handheld Field Tester

Posted on: Wednesday, 22 February 2006, 09:00 CST

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; TSX: JDU) today announced an optical test module for the HST-3000 handheld services tester specifically designed to meet the triple-play test needs of field technicians who install and maintain PON-based FTTx networks. The module, which simultaneously measures the optical power of the two downstream signals (1490nm and 1550nm) and the upstream signal at 1310nm within an FTTx/PON environment, also includes user-adjustable thresholds for easy pass/fail analysis. The product will be introduced at OFC/NFOEC 2006 in Anaheim, California, March 5-10 (booth 2323).

The JDSU HST-3000 is a handheld tester designed to meet the full depth and breadth of test applications required by field technicians responsible for access network service installation and maintenance. By providing automation features that improve work force efficiency, the HST-3000 is ideally suited for supporting advanced access networks, including copper and fiber. When combined with other optional capabilities such as VoIP and IP video testing, the new module, branded the OLP-3057 FTTx Optical Service Interface Module (SIM), makes the HST-3000 an ideal all-in-one solution for PON-based FTTx access network testing. The HST-3000 can be built to order and quickly and easily upgraded with new modules as application and technology needs change.

"The HST-3000 has always provided the most advanced and cost-effective solution for the full set of test applications required by field technicians," said Jerry Gentile, general manager of JDSU's telecommunication field services (TFS) Test and Measurement group. "Together with the existing copper, DSL, and IP triple play service test functions, this module makes the HST-3000 an ideal all-in-one solution for installation and maintenance testing of next generation FTTx and PON-based triple play networks."

The HST-3000 includes an easy-to-use graphical interface that enables users with limited test experience to conduct easy pass/fail analysis via user-adjustable, pre-defined thresholds per wavelength. Multiple user-defined pass/fail profiles can be stored on the instrument and a graphical display of all three wavelength measurements enables easy analysis of signals over time and prevents the possibility of missing a momentary collapse in signal. A universal adapter system to accommodate all standard 2.5mm optical connectors is included in the module.

About the JDSU HST-3000

The JDSU HST-3000 is a modular, hand-held test tool that scales to address a broad spectrum of different access network technology testing needs, from the physical layer to the application layer. It was the first hand-held field test tool to provide basic turn-up and troubleshooting of VoIP deployment, supporting physical layer analysis through packet metrics, signaling analysis and voice quality determination. HST-3000 capabilities allow packet capture of live VoIP calls, including VoIP call storage and an integrated FTP capability to send captured VoIP calls to be analyzed by JDSU's PVA-1000 software. The HST was created to improve efficiency and lower the costs associated with installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting business and residential services and networks. The HST-3000 combines copper, voice and data service testing features with unparalleled process automation capabilities in a lightweight, battery-operated unit.

By adding ADSL2+ and IP Video test options, the HST-3000 breaks new ground in test support for triple-play service deployments and extends its capabilities for installation and maintenance crews who will be responsible for turn-up and troubleshooting these new services. The JDSU HST-3000 VoIP Tester was named Product of the Year for 2002 by INTERNET TELEPHONY(R) magazine.
