Blowing Snow a Driving Hazard This Morning

Posted on: Wednesday, 22 February 2006, 12:00 CST

By Grand Forks Herald, N.D.

Feb. 22--Blowing snow and snow fog are causing driving hazards on northeastern North Dakota highways this morning, according to the state Department of Transportation.

In Devils Lake this morning, visibility and traffic speeds were reduced along U.S. Highway 2 due to snow fog, the drifting snow that flies up in the wake of a fast-moving vehicle.

New snow is falling all over the northeastern corner of North Dakota, reducing traffic speeds in Grand Forks, Ramsey, Rolette, Cavalier, Pembina, Walsh and Towner counties.

Hidden underneath a light cover of snow, long stretches of ice in the region also slowed traffic, according to the Department of Transportation.

At 8 a.m., major routes in North Dakota were in the following condition:

-- Interstate 29: Snow covered from Minto to the Canadian border; scattered ice from Fargo to Minto.

-- U.S. Highway 2: Snow covered from Leeds to Lakota; scattered snow from Niagara to Grand Forks Air Force Base; scattered ice from Lakota to Niagara, and from Grand Forks Air Force Base to Grand Forks.

-- U.S. Highway 81: Snow covered from Minto to St. Thomas; scattered ice from Manvel to Minto and from St. Thomas to Joliette.

-- U.S. Highway 281: Continuous ice from Bisbee to Canadian border; snow covered from New Rockford to Devils Lake and from Devils Lake to the junction at Highway 2; scattered ice from Carrington to New Rockford, and around Devils Lake, and from Churchs Ferry to Bisbee.

-- N.D. Highway 5: Continuous ice from Rock Lake to Clyde; scattered ice from Cavalier to Hamilton, and 10 miles east of Langdon to Cavalier.

Fair driving conditions were reported this morning in parts of northwest Minnesota, including Polk, Kittson, Pennington, Red Lake, Roseau and Marshall counties. Roadways were spotted with icy patches, and snow was reported on the highways. A snow haze reduced visibility on most roadways, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Driving conditions worsened farther east in northwest Minnesota. In Beltrami, Clearwater and Lake of the Woods counties, snow and ice slowed traffic speeds significantly, according to the transportation department.
