Feb. 23--JENKINS TWP. -- PennDOT will hold a public meeting tomorrow night to discuss the latest plans for a new Eighth Street bridge to connect River Road in the township to Susquehanna Avenue in Wyoming.
The project is expected to cost between $15 million and $20 million. The state Department of Transportation plans to start construction after receiving bids in 2008, spokeswoman Karen Dussinger said. The project has been in the works for years and has been delayed primarily by land acquisition, Dussinger said.
PennDOT wants to build a new bridge downstream from the green metal bridge, which would be demolished after the new bridge opens, Dussinger said.
Dussinger called the old bridge "too narrow" and "functionally obsolete."
Representatives of PennDOT and its project consultant, Modjeski and Masters Inc., plan to discuss for the first time plans to build a road for contractors who will work on the project, Dussinger said.
That road will be off Susquehanna Avenue in Wyoming, and will be turned over to the state Fish and Boat Commission when the bridge project is done, Dussinger said. The road will provide a permanent boat launch access.
The present bridge has two 9-foot-8 1/2-inch travel lanes, no shoulders, and an unprotected 6-foot sidewalk. The new bridge will feature 12-foot lanes, 10-foot shoulders, and a concrete barrier to protect the sidewalk.
The bridge project also would include widening River Road and adding a left-turn lane on the east approach.
------------
A public meeting for the Eighth Street Bridge replacement project will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Jenkins Township Fire Department, 2 Second St., Port Griffith. Plans will be available for review at 5:30 p.m.
